How Times Change!

Link

The Old Man taps his snuff bottle gently
Then peers into a distance
As if in a reverie:
A bad mannered young man
Wagged his fingers on his face
He winced, and hoped
That lightning never struck him
Another tail of a goat blew dust
Into his eyes with his big motokaa
And now, so many miles from the market,
He had forgotten to buy his tobacco
His nose, like pepper on wound, irritated

When his feet was light,
He could walk from Nasal to Nauyapong’
Swift like an antelope
When he was this size (so young actually)
Donkeys carried posho and never stirred dust
Then, if somebody’s bad whispered
Was caught in his ears
He could tear him into sixteen pieces

How times change!

Poem written in response to Poets United's The Thursday Think Tank #86 - Rebirth

My Child, If Sinners Try To Entice You, Do Not Consent!

Proverbs 1:10 –15

My child, if sinners try to entice you, do not consent!
If they say, “Come with us! We will lie in wait to shed blood; we will ambush an innocent person capriciously. We will swallow them alive like Sheol, those full of vigor like those going down to the Pit. We will seize all kinds of precious wealth; we will fill our houses with plunder. Join with us! We will all share equally in what we steal.”
My child, do not go down their way, withhold yourself from their path;

Little Pilgrim, the Laws of the Land
Prohibit innocent blood shed;
Many therefore obey it
Yet, in their hearts, they have killed many
Eyes that dart like arrows
Mouths that soil happiness
Evil thoughts that can suffocate brain cells

It would not be enough, Little Pilgrim
That you preserve life and other people’s wealth
Steal not from a brother
Plunder not from a stranger
Having desisted, condemn these
At the top of your lungs
So that you are absolved from the sins of omission

“The Man”

Mark 2:12

And immediately the man stood up, took his stretcher, and went out in front of them all. They were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

“The Man”—why didn’t he have a name?
He stood up, yes, that much we are told
He took his stretcher, we read that
He walked away, wait a minute, well…
But who was “the man”?

He could have had a name—right?—
Say, Zebedee, Nebuchadnezzar or Zechariah
Why didn’t he have a name?
Was it that his name slipped out of memory?

Did Mark perhaps want us to grapple with this?
To wonder, for instance, that “the man”
Could be us on our various stretchers in life
Immobility in sickness, paralysis in faith?

Could “the man” be the shadows lurking within us
Afraid of the journey, numbed in oblivion?
What was “the man’s” name, I ask.
